2013 BeavRG-XV Mommy Letter
Mommy Letters are a Mensa Tradition. They tell you things you should expect at the Mensa event you're about to attend. The name comes from: "I wish my mother had told me about...."

The RG will continue through Sunday afternoon.

a BeaveRG Tradition. Coordinator self-nominations requested.
Friday: 4 PM - Midnight
Saturday: 8 AM - 6:30 PM; approx. 10 PM - Midnight
(closed for the banquet, speaker and auction)
Sunday: 8 - 10 AM
The Hospitality Suite is both a refueling stop and an RG's social hub, where attendees drop by to eat, drink and chat. All food and drink served in Hospitality is included in your registration fee, and the suite is staffed by fellow Ms who have volunteered to keep all of us as well fed during the weekend as our budget allows! The selection of food available varies throughout the weekend and primarily consists of snack and finger foods, but enough more substantial fare is offered that few attendees find it necessary to buy food during the RG. Beverages available include local craft beers, local and imported wines, local sake, soft drinks, coffee, tea, juices and bottled water.
PDX AIRPORT TRANSPORT
If you are flying in to this event, just take the MAX train from PDX airport. Depart right outside the terminal, get off at the hotel. Fare under $3 each way.
Here's a virtual ride from PDX to Downtown.
Our stop is the Convention Center.
to this or any RG may meet our genial first timer host in Hospitality, Friday at 6:15 pm for a quick tour and
presentation on how to maximize their enjoyment of this weekend. Questions such as "Where is the free food?", "Where is the free
booze?", and "Are all the Mensans labeled?" will be answered, and mysteries such as attack bidding at the auction explained.
HUGGING AND HUG DOTS
The "Secret" Mensa handshake may or may not be a hug, but Ms take hugging very seriously. We even have roving judges and give awards for the best male and female huggers. However you are under no obligation to participate if the idea of being hugged by strangers makes you the least bit uncomfortable. At the registration table you'll see colored dots which people attach to their RG Name Badges. Here's the color code:
* Red Don't.... Even.... Ask!
* Yellow Ask First, Then Maybe.
* Green I'm Ok With Hugging.
* Green Green Green (three or more dots) um, well....
SCHOLARSHIP AUCTION AND FUNDRAISERS
Oregon Mensa participates in the Mensa Education and Research Foundation’s scholarship program. Each year, funds are raised at the RG to support our scholarships. On Saturday, the Silent Auction will be held, where you can bid on items donated by Mensans and others who wish to support our program. If you are the winning bidder, you must pay for and pick up your treasures between 5:00 and 6:00 pm on Saturday. This year we will also be selling donated books for $1 each. Books can be purchased throughout the day.
After dinner on Saturday night, we will hold our Oral Auction. The auction is a lot of fun for both bidders and spectators. Some items are silly, some are practical, and some are out-of-this-world fabulous! There are items in every price range, so be prepared to join in the fun.
There will be two catered meals for those who have purchased tickets in advance. If you have not purchased a meal ticket, but wish to do so at the RG, please inquire at the Registration Desk about the wait list, as there are sometimes last-minute cancellations. The programs after the catered meals are open to all RG attendees.
Hospitality will be closed during this meal, so if you don’t attend the banquet you’ll need to make your own arrangements elsewhere for dinner. After dinner, please join us for the awards announcements and the live auction.
There is no dress code; most people wear whatever they’ve been wearing to RG events, however some people enjoy dressing up for dinner.
HOTEL UPGRADES / EXTENDED STAY
Extended stay: the hotel will host you at the RG rate for several days before and after the event.
For more details about hotel amenities, visit
Red Lion website
There is no pool or hot tub at this hotel.
Excessively rowdy or visibly intoxicated persons may be ejected from hospitality or the event at the sole discretion of the event chair.
GREYHOUND & AMTRACK
Greyhound and Amtrack are close to each other at the north end of downtown. Shuttle from there to the Convention Center on MAX Red, Green or Blue lines, Eastbound.
A great way to see many cities including Portland on the cheap is via public transportation. MAX the, Portland Metropolitian Light Rail system stops right at the hotel. All-Day or All-Week passes recommended. More Info: www.trimet.org
MEALS AWAY FROM THE RG
While we are hoping for some of the wonderful weather that is often enjoyed here in springtime, remember that April rain brings May flowers, and we have flowers most of the year . . . Trench coats optional but no bail if you expose too much of yourself to Portland.
Maybe not as bad as some big cities but Friday afternoon between 4 – 6 PM will be rush hour, meaning everything crawls. So if you can avoid driving those two hours, it will definitely be worth it.
The hotel parking garage is $18 per day, but we have arrangements for free parking all weekend. Check at RG Registration for a pass.
Workable, but not great. The hotel has two small slow elevators and they're often full. Check with the registrar to seek if we can work with your needs.
